We have designs on these pat-oreo-tic pops, yet again..bring on the stars and stripes! Have a happy 4th, y'all!
If, like us, you consider yourself a world citizen, even though you’re a desi at heart, you know that you’ll always adore the Stars and Stripes just as much as the Ashoka Chakra in tricolor splendor. That the 4th of July signifies much more than the fireworks that light up the sky, making up in whatever minuscule way for the lack of Diwali luster in these shores. That when your little ones sing “..where atleast I know I’m free..” your heart flutters just a little, as you think back to the assembly line you stood in as a child, dedicatedly chanting “..Jaya He..” That you’ll always dig sampling some fingerlickin’ grilled fare at a friend’s backyard cookout, even if all you pine for is a spiced up Bhutta. That you’ll love America’s favorite cookie just as much as our very own Britannia Bourbon biscuit.
To the spirit of being in the USA with a desi heart, then. To freedom and unity, in diversity..we present our Pat-oreo-ticPops that are not only a treat for the merry munchin', but also good for the overt oglin'! Happy July the 4th!
1 Box Double-stuf Oreos
1 Package White Candy melts
1 Package Lollipop sticks
Sprinkles - Red sugar and candy stars, or as desired
Melt a few of the candy melts as per the package instructions. Dip one end of a lollipop stick into the melted candy and insert it carefully into an oreo, about half an inch or so. Lay on a wax paper lined tray to dry. Repeat for all the cookies. Allow them to dry completely, for about half an hour, so that the sticks stay firm when the pops are dipped and eaten. In case a cookie cracks while inserting the stick, go ahead and use it for a snack, because it won't hold up while dipping.
Meanwhile, prepare a container with a piece of Styrofoam or Thermocol or even a florist sponge or block to stick the pops in after they are dipped. Get the sprinkles ready in small bowls.
Melt about a cup of candy melts in a narrow cup. Carefully dip each pop into the candy coating, shake off the excess by twirling the stick. Hold the pop horizontally over a plate, sprinkle with the red sugar and add the stars. Wait a few seconds for it to set a bit and then insert it in the prepared container to dry. Repeat for the remaining pops, melting more candy as required, and microwaving it for 15-30 seconds if it gets too thick. Allow the pops to harden and then arrange them in a dish or pot with the Styrofoam or chosen base, spread candy in complementing colors to cover the top. Serve with tall glasses of iced milk.
